The Salerno mobility

Biodiversity

Biodiversity is an important, yet frequently overlooked topic when talking about climate crisis. The common misconception is that biodiversity is just about protecting wildlife — but in fact it’s one of our most powerful natural tools for fighting climate change. In the Learning Teaching Training activity hosted by Liceo Statale Alfano I from Salerno, students and also teachers gained a lot of understanding when preparing their presentations and listening to other students. The field trips gave an opportunity to experience the biodiversity of the region more directly, see the beauty and uniqueness of the land and understand the need to protect and preserve it. The organic farm showed the participants that biodiversity is related not only to wild fauna and flora but also to agricultural production, which is an important industry in every country and they were able to observe sustainable agricultural processes. This brings the notion of adaptability, which is important to strengthen resilience and instill that reality can be influenced positively. The practical activities in the lab and workshops focused on the main topics of the project - climate change, sustainable strategies, waste management, biodiversity and information technology in education. Visiting two ancient UNESCO Heritage Sites allowed students to connect to the origins of common European culture and understand that our roots are the same, adding to their European identity. These activities aimed to raise awareness on the history of the territory and to develop knowledge and awareness of what has been done so far and it is being done in recent years to preserve native genetic resources to protect biodiversity at both regional and national level.
