The Salihli mobility

Ecomusicology and traditional instruments

During the Learning Teaching Training Activity hosted by Salihli Bilim ve Sanat Merkezi ecological transformation was addressed by introducing ecomusicology. Ecomusicology is quite a new subject about which participants knew virtually nothing and it was presented in depth and by highly qualified professors. Despite this it has practical relevance in education by reinforcing desired attitudes in terms of climate change response as it presents a human being as naturecultural and not detached from their natural surroundings. So using it in education helps strengthen the connection of people with the biological environment and develop the sense of caring about the very place where each lives. In practice, the technique of soundscape can be widely used in all institutions when students are taken to trips and field activities. It has special significance nowadays as the young generation tend to visit places with their earphones on, rarely paying attention to their surroundings and especially the sounds. Apart from the effect on environmental awareness, this technique may benefit the well-being of contemporary overstimulated youth as a calming and relaxation technique. The preparations for presenting traditional instruments gave students a lot of insight in the topic rarely discussed in formal education classes. They were able to explore a part of their heritage that they knew very little about and appreciate the variety of sounds and traditional techniques to produce these instruments. Visiting the ancient UNESCO Heritage Sites strengthened the feeling of having common roots, being European citizens with rich common heritage and common contemporary problems and values. Valuable lessons about the foundation of common European civilization, democracy, the first coins and very ancient cities are necessary for the younger generations to create the feeling of belonging and relate to other nations of common Europe. The main purpose of the IT workshop: Recognition and Application of Web-2 tools - Sound and Instrument recordings with "Bandlab"- Note writing with "Musescore” was to improve students’ digital music literacy, creativity, and awareness of contemporary music production processes.
